Our Surrey studio was filled with energy and laughter when Indigo brought 11 of her best friends in for her Photo Shoot party.  The party was the perfect way to celebrate Indigo’s birthday and also the girls’ last year together at school before they all move to different senior schools.

The girls loved having a mini makeover by our makeup artist and were ready for our cameras with lots of smiles and giggles!

PSPJune2

We asked the girls to bring in three different outfits to be photographed in.  The most popular theme at the moment is “Onesies” and these girls had some great jungle ones that we hadn’t seen before!

Becoming a parent is the most exciting and daunting time in anyone’s life.  We see enough new parents in our Surrey photography studio to know that it is a time in life when support from friends and family is vital.  Although our newborn photography captures our Mango babies looking serene and peaceful, we have all had children so we know how hard those first few weeks can be.  When we hear of things that we think will help our new mums we like to share it here.  Last week we learned all about what a Doula is and we have decided that every new mum needs one!

We met up with Naomi Owen – one of Katie’s old school friends – who is a trained postnatal Doula and NCT teacher.  You can see her website HERE.   She very kindly let us attend one of her NCT classes to meet and photograph some of the mums she is teaching and to find out what it takes to become an NCT teacher, and what being a Doula involves – and boy do we wish we had all had a Doula when we had our babies!

Naomi is an NCT teacher and Postnatal Doula.

WHEN AND WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME AN NCT TEACHER & DOULA?

My interest in labour and birth never dissipated after having my children and I felt strongly about parents being entitled to informed choice about their birth experiences. I started volunteering in the local NCT branch and then I decided to train to become an antenatal teacher.  I also wanted something which could fit around family life.

Becoming a doula came a bit later.  In my role as an NCT teacher, I had numerous new parents coming and asking me for support and finding those early weeks hard. There is a limit as to how much help I could give over the phone so I decided that becoming a postnatal doula meant I could cross that boundary and offer practical help to new parents. It also means that I am better equipped to prepare parents before they have had their babies as I am in contact with new babies all the time and never forget the difficulties that face new parents.
WHAT DO YOU FEEL IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF AN NCT COURSE?

Most people come hoping to meet people who are going through a similar experience.  That peer support comes into it’s own once the babies have arrived!  While it is an antenatal course, I hope that parents come away with some skills that they can use not only for birth, but into parenthood as well.  Things like learning how to relax can be invaluable with a new baby when you only have an hour to yourself all day! Understanding decision making is also something I hope parents remember in labour and also in parenthood.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF A DOULA?

A doula is there, not to look after the baby (or babies!), but to help and empower parents to be able to look after their baby with confidence.  That doesn’t mean doing it right all the time, but it means having the confidence in themselves to try things and if that doesn’t work, to try something else. It is such a privilege to be invited into a home and spend time with them during those precious first weeks and watch them grow as parents.

WHY DOES EVERY MUM NEED A DOULA?

A doula is like having a close friend, mum or sister around you offering practical and emotional support.  They will make you a cup of tea and have a good chat about all things baby and not baby, and then finish that washing up you never got around to doing, while you feed your baby.  They will make you a sandwich and pop it in the fridge so that you have something you can grab when they’ve gone. They will come out with you to the shops when you’re not sure how to manage the bus on your own, and sit with you while you try feeding you baby in public for the first time. They offer small kindnesses which have big effects.

Lots of happy mums-to-be preparing for their journey into parenthood.

WHAT TRAINING IS REQUIRED TO BECOME AN NCT TEACHER AND DOULA?
The diploma that I did in Antenatal Education took me 2.5 years through the NCT and the University of Bedfordshire. It was more academic than I anticipated, and has now been reclassified as a Foundation Degree! There was a huge emphasis on reflective practice, and we were encouraged to reflect on our births and feeding experiences.
There are lots of different courses out there to become a doula.  I attended the Nurturing Birth course as I knew that it prepared people for being a postnatal doula.  Some others focus mainly on being a birth doula. It is important to attend a course which will address your needs and crucially that is recognised by Doula UK (www.doula.org.uk).

What is a Family Mini Shoot?

A mini shoot is perfect if you want to update your family photos.  Each shoot is 30 minutes long and suitable for families with up to 2 children.  If you have a larger family these sessions are not suitable as we will need more time to capture your family perfectly.  You can book a portrait shoot with us instead.  Please see our website for more details on our family portrait shoots.

We want to thank all six families for coming on Saturday.  It was a pleasure to photograph you and lovely to see some old faces as well as new.  We have photographed some of the children from when they were newborn so it was lovely to see how much they have grown and their little personalities!

Follow our easy tips below and you will find an instant improvement in all of your outside photographs.  If you can’t get the hang of it then book a Mango Studios Portrait session and let us capture your family perfectly for you!

1.  The best time to take photos outside is early morning or early evening when the light is softer and more flattering.

2. Try to avoid taking pictures in the middle of the day.  If the sun is shining directly over your subjects head, it will create dark shadows under the eyes.

3. Turn your subjects so they are facing away from the sun or find a nice shady area.  You will still get the sense that it is a sunny day but the pictures will be much more flattering with softer features and no squinty eyes.

Katie agreed once again to be our Mango Guinea-Pig to demonstrate the dos and don’ts of outside photography!

Please note all shots are shown straight out of camera, no editing had been done in Photoshop.

IMG_6973

In the picture above Katie is facing the sun full on (this is the first mistake most people make in outdoors photography.) Notice how her face looks too shiny in places and too dark in others. Her eyes are squinting and look almost black and the creases round her mouth and eyes are exaggerated by the shadows created by the strong sunlight!

IMG_6977

In the above photograph Katie has turned away from the sun.  It is an improvement from the first picture. You can see that her eyes are more open, the shine has gone from her face and her features are softened.  However there is still quite a bit of shadow on her face due to the fact that the sun is still shining down on her.  If your camera has manual settings you can slightly over expose the picture or increase the ISO to gently lighten the face.

IMG_6978

This is the best picture of Katie – considering it’s Monday morning and she hasn’t brushed her hair or put make up on yet!  In this picture she was standing in open shade – this means standing under a tree or covered area, facing outwards so the light is on your face but you are shaded from above.  Her eyes are open and light and the sun isn’t casting any unflattering shadows under her eyes or nose.  Also note her posture in this picture.  Her shoulders are back and her head is turning away from her body, elongating her neck.

We hope you found these tips useful and we are sure that if you follow these rules your photographs will improve instantly.  It’s the perfect time of year to get outside and play around with your camera, have fun and enjoy experimenting.

Have a look at some of our recent Family Mini Shoots that took place this weekend in our buttercup field.  Our next Family Mini Shoot day will be held on 11th October 2014.  There are only 5 spaces available.  Click here for more information about these exclusive mini shoots.
